DePaul University

Illinois, USA

"I will show you the way of wisdom."

DePaul University is a private, Roman-Catholic university in Chicago, Illinois. Founded by the Vincentians in 1898, the university takes its name from the 17th-century French priest Saint Vincent de Paul. The students embody St. Vincent's values, beliefs, and influence through the question: what must be done, in terms of community outreach. In 1998, it became the largest Catholic university by enrollment in the United States. In 2018 it was still considered the #1 Nation's largest Catholic university. Following in the footsteps of its founders, DePaul places special emphasis on recruiting first-generation students and others from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Educational Experience

Teaching and learning are our priorities at DePaul. That might seem obvious, but we’re the largest private university whose faculty members’ priority is teaching. We’re also the nation’s largest Catholic university — and we’re committed to an educational experience that weaves together mind, place, people and heart.

Academic Excellence

DePaul has more than 300 undergraduate majors and graduate programs, so chances are good we have what you’re looking for. Many of our professors work in Chicago as consultants, researchers and entrepreneurs, and incorporate their experiences in the classroom.

Mission

Inspired by the legacy of Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac, DePaul University is a community gathered together for the sake of our mission. These saints shared a belief in the God-given dignity of all people lived out in an ethos we call Vincentian personalism. For more than a century the values of inclusivity, personalism, and professionalism have shaped DePaul’s distinctive culture and our service to students.

Quick Facts

The university enrolls around 16,000 undergraduate and about 7,600 graduate/law students, making DePaul the 13th largest private university by enrollment in the United States, and the largest private university in Illinois. According to the Division of Student Affairs website, about 90% of DePaul's students commute or live off campus. The student body represents a wide array of religious, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds, including over 60 foreign countries.
